A cantora de jazz Irene Reid nasceu em Savannah,Georgia no 23 de Setembro de 1930 e começou a cantar no coral da igreja que frequentava com a familia. Foi para Nova York em 1947 a fim de iniciar uma carreira artistica e se deu bem, ao vencer a competição de calouros, varias vezes, do Teatro Apollo, conseguindo um contrato de dois anos com a banda de Dick Vance no Savoy Ballroom no Harlem, antes de se aventurar por conta propria.
Seu estilo era permeado pelos elementos de gospel e blues. Infelizmente se talento jamais foi reconhecido e jamais chegou a fazer sucesso como suas contemporâneas Dinah Washington e Esther Phillips, que faziam abordagem musical similar a dela.
Mas, atividade artistica jamais lhe faltou e até o fim de seus dias, permaneceu ativa, e ainda experimentou, uma subta onda de sucesso em sua carreira, quando já se preparava para partir.
Em 1961 começou a cantar na Orquestra de Count Basie onde ficou por um ano, para logo em seguida formar seu proprio grupo musical "Irene Reid and Company". Gravou com a big band dois discos para Verve, uma das principais gravadoras daquela época. Mas o grande destaque de sua carreira aconteceu apos a experiencia com Basie, na Broadway, onde ela participou do elenco de " The Wiz"no papel da bruxa malvada Evillene , que originalmente foi de Mabel King.
Em 1997, depois de passar duas décadas atuando em show business, Reid começou a gravar com o organista Charles Earlan para Savant, uma pequena gravadora. Foi com ele que gravou o CD "Million Dollar Secret", o primeiro de uma série de seis albuns (mais do que em sua inteira trajetória) que marcaram o final de sua carreira.
Atuou sistematicamente em vários clubes de New York, até lhe faltar saúde para continuar.
Irene Reid faleceu em Janeiro de 2006.

Jazz vocalist Irene Reid, was born on September 23,1930 in Savannah,Georgia and began singing in a church choir there and moved to New York City in 1947 to pursue a singing career. After winning the Apollo's Theater amateur contest several times, she spent two years with Dick Vance band at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem before going out on her own.
Irene was a jazz vocalist whose style was heavily laced with elements of gospel and the blues, Ms. Reid never achieved as much success as contemporaries like Dinah Washington and Esther Phillips who took a similar approach. But she worked steadily, and she finished her life on a high note with a surprising career resurgence.
She joined the Basie band in 1961 and stayed for a year, then formed her own small group, Irene Reid and Company, and recorded two big-band albums for Verve, one of the leading jazz labels of the period. But probably her most prominent job in the post-Basie years was on Broadway, where she briefly joined the cast of “The Wiz” as the wicked witch Evillene, the role originated by Mabel King.
In 1997, after two decades spent largely under the show-business radar, Ms. Reid began recording for the small Savant label with the organist Charles Earland. Her album “Million Dollar Secret” was the first of six she released as a leader in her last years “ more than she had in her entire career up to that time. She also worked frequently at Smoke, the Lenox Lounge and other New York nightclubs until a few years ago, when health problems forced her to stop performing.
Irene passed away on January, 2006 in New York City.
