Faleceu ontem aos 65 anos em New York o baterista de jazz Shelton Gary nascido em Fairfield, Alabama. Gary estudou bateria com o fabuloso Papa Jô Jones, e por ter-se tonado "protegido" de Joe, ganhou o apelido de Baby Joe. Foi integrante da banda de Count Basie. Sua primeira gravação foi com a famosa Harlem Blues & Jazz Band em 1960 e foi também com a mesma banda que fez a sua ultima apresentação duas semanas atrás em New Jersey. Com a Harlem Band excursionou pela Suécia.
Seu histórico artistico inclui trabalhos com figuras ilustres do porte de Jay McShann, Illinois Jacquet, Howlin’Wolf, Freddie King e o vocalista Joe Turner.
A Radio WKCR 89,9 FM da Columbia University na cidade de Nova York prestou tributo ao musico falecido através de um Memorial Broadcast durante toda transmissão na tarde de hoje.
