EVA TAYLOR, THE DIXIE NIGHTINGALE.

A atriz, cantora de jazz e blues Irene Gibbons, que ficou famosa com o nome Eva Taylor, nasceu no 22 de janeiro de 1895, em St.Louis, Missouri e foi uma das primeiras cantoras Afro-Americanas a cantar no radio e a gravar um disco, mesmo sem ser considerada uma autêntica cantora de blues.

Sua voz tinha um som agradável, não desafinava, muito swing e o seu fraseado era de fácil compreenção. Assim como Ella Fitzgerald, uma década depois, Eva Taylor sempre externava um ar de felicidade, ao cantar.

Começou a carreira artistica como atriz-mirim, viajou pelo mundo e em 1920 foi para Nova York, onde se tornou famosa cantando em clubes no Harlem. No ano seguinte casou-se com o produtor Clarence Williams e juntos participaram de muitos projetos, gravações de discos, 12 canções da revista musical "Bottomland" e vários programas no rádio.

Eva fez inúmeras gravações pela gravadora Blue Five de Williams, e participou das gravações que reuniu em estúdio a famosa dupla Sidney Bechet e Louis Armstrong, entre 1924 e 1925.

No final da década de 20, apresentava o seu próprio programa de rádio pela Rede NBC. Abandonou o show business na década de 40, mas até a sua morte, se apresentou em concertos esporádicos e clubes de jazz.

Eva Taylor, faleceu em outubro de 1977 em Nova York.

Talented entertainer, jazz and blues singer Eva Taylor, born as Irene Gibbons, on January 21st in St.Louis, Missouri, was one of the first African-American singers to be heard on radio and to record who was not a classic blues singer.

She had a very likable sound, was in-tune even if her range was small, swung well, and had an easy-to-understand voice. As with Ella Fitzgerald, a decade later, Eva Taylor always sounded happy to be singing. She started out as child actor in a traveling revue that toured the world visiting Europe, Australia and New Zealand between 1900 and 1920.

In 1920 she moved to New York City, where she became a popular singer in the night clubs of Harlem. The following year she married pianist, publisher and producer Clarence Williams. The couple collaborated on many projects, including dozens of songs, a musical revue called "Bottomland", and radio programs.

They remained married until Williams' death in 1965. In 1922 Taylor made her first record for the African-American owned Black Swan label, who billed her as "The Dixie Nightingale". She would continue to record dozens of Blues, Jazz and popular sides for Okeh and Columbia thoughout the 1920s and 1930s. She was the lead singer on several of Williams' classic Blue Five recording dates, including the famous sessions that brought Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet together in 1924 and 1925.

During the late 1920s Eva had her own radio show on NBC in New York. She retired from show business in the early 1940s, but continued to make occasional concert and night club appearances. The actor Clarence Williams III of Mod Squad fame is Eva and Clarence's grandson.
