ALICE BABS, THE SWEDISH JAZZ VOCALIST.

A cantora e atriz sueca Hildur Alice Nilsson, mais conhecida como Alice Babs, nasceu no 26 de janeiro de 1924 em Kalmar, Suécia. Estabeleceu inicialmente, reputação intrenacional como cantora de jazz, devido aos seu envolvimento com o genero. Em 1939, cantava em clubes noturnos.

Seu primeiro sucesso foi com a canção "Swing it Magistern" -(Suinga, professor!), quando ela era apenas uma adolescente de 15 anos de idade, em 1940. Como atriz, Alice participou de vários filmes produzidos em seu país.

Em 1958, Alice Babs foi a primeira cantora a representar a Suécia no Festival Eurovisão da Canção, terminando a competição em 4º lugar, interpetando a canção "Lilla Stjärna" (Estrelinha).

Em 1963 inicou um período de colaboração com o bandleader Duke Ellington que rendeu a sua participação no segundo e terceiro "Sacred Concerts" de Duke que escreveu partes da música, especialmente para ela. A voz de Babs tinha um grande alcance e Ellington disse que quando ela não cantava as partes que eram para ela, ele tinha de usar três diferentes cantoras. Quando Ellington esteve em turnê com sua banda pela Europa,em 1973, ela participou também de alguns shows. Infelizmente, um disco notável que ela gravou com Ellingtom, continua até os nossos dias, sem republicação.

Alice Babs, atualmente, vive os seus anos de outono, se apresentando em publico, esporadicamente.

Alice Babs, one of Europe's top jazz singers was born on January 24th, 1924 in Kalmar,Sweden and since she was a teenager, she is a celebrity in her native Sweden and a legend in Europe, while in the United States (where she has rarely visited) she is chiefly known for her occasional association with Duke Ellington.

Since Babs was an early nickname, she adopted Alice Babs as her stage name, at the beginning of her career.

She began making records when she was only 15, having a hit with "Swing It Magistern"( Swing it Teacher). Babs'cheerful style, youthful enthusiasm and ability to incorporate occasional yodeling into her singing made her the symbol of swing in Sweden, while her versatility and impressive musicianship allowed her to have a long career.

Alice Babs also worked as an actress in the 1940s, appearing in more than a dozen films in Swedish, although most of her recordings were of swing standards in English. While open to aspects of bebop, she was not really a bop singer, although her tone and sense of swing fit into the 1950s Swedish cool jazz movement quite confortably. She recorded steadly sometimes with violinist Svend Asmussem, the Harry Arnold Orchestra or altoist Arne Domnerus, and a occasionally ventrured outside the world of jazz into pop and classical music.

In 1963, Babs recorded a notable album with Duke Ellington that unfortunatelly remains out of print. She later worked with Ellington on his second and third Sacred Concerts sounding particularly beautiful on "Heaven". She also performed with Ellington during part of his European tour, in 1973.

While less active, since the early 1990s, Alice Babs still makes occasional public appearances.
