ALICE BABS, THE SWEDISH JAZZ VOCALIST.

Alice Babs, one of Europe's top jazz singers was born on January 24th, 1924 in Kalmar,Sweden and since she was a teenager, she is a celebrity in her native Sweden and a legend in Europe, while in the United States (where she has rarely visited) she is chiefly known for her occasional association with Duke Ellington.

Since Babs was an early nickname, she adopted Alice Babs as her stage name, at the beginning of her career.

She began making records when she was only 15, having a hit with "Swing It Magistern"( Swing it Teacher). Babs'cheerful style, youthful enthusiasm and ability to incorporate occasional yodeling into her singing made her the symbol of swing in Sweden, while her versatility and impressive musicianship allowed her to have a long career.

Alice Babs also worked as an actress in the 1940s, appearing in more than a dozen films in Swedish, although most of her recordings were of swing standards in English. While open to aspects of bebop, she was not really a bop singer, although her tone and sense of swing fit into the 1950s Swedish cool jazz movement quite confortably. She recorded steadly sometimes with violinist Svend Asmussem, the Harry Arnold Orchestra or altoist Arne Domnerus, and a occasionally ventrured outside the world of jazz into pop and classical music.

In 1963, Babs recorded a notable album with Duke Ellington that unfortunatelly remains out of print. She later worked with Ellington on his second and third Sacred Concerts sounding particularly beautiful on "Heaven". She also performed with Ellington during part of his European tour, in 1973.

While less active, since the early 1990s, Alice Babs still makes occasional public appearances.

Um documentário de 1980 "Joe Albany.. a Jazz Life" e o livro "Low Down, Junk, Jazz and other Fairy Tales from Childhood" escrito por sua filha, Amy Jo, contam a sua história.

Jope Albany faleceu em New York City em 1988.

Jazz pianist Joseph Albani, known as "Joe Albany", was born on January 24th, 1924, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and studied piano as a child and by 1943 he was working on the West Coast in Benny Carter's orchestra. It is remarked on his being among the few white pianists to have played bebop with Charlie Parker. He also played with Miles Davies.

He continued for a few years afterward and was on an album by Warne Marsh album in 1958. Despite that, most of the 1950s and 1960s saw him battling a heroin addiction or living in seclusion in Europe. He also had several unsuccessful marriages in the period. He returned to jazz in the 1970s and produced a few albums.

He was the focus of a documentary in 1980 titled "Joe Albany ... A Jazz Life" and his daughter Amy Jo "AJ" wrote the memoir "Low Down: Junk, Jazz, and Other Fairy Tales From Childhood" concerning him. The book received favorable reviews.

AVERY PARRISH, O COMPOSITOR DO BLUES "AFTER HOURS"

Ouça David Maxwell solando "After Hours", a famosa composição de Avery Parrish.

Pianist and composer Avery Parrish was born on January 24th,1917. Parrish attended Alabama State Teachers College where he became a member of the 'Bama Street Collegians in 1934, which in time became the Erskine Hawkins Big Band. Parrish was with Hawkins through the glory years, staying until 1941 and appearing on all of the band's early recordings.

The Erskine Hawkins Big Band, which, while not as popular as many other big bands of the era, were a very able and functioning working band that has one detail that no other band from that time has: they created the classic standard “After Hours.”

Avery Parrish played piano and arranged the song in 1940 for label Bluebird. It became an instant classic, and for many years any piano player worth his salt knew how to play this blues chart. It has been recorded many times. There are versions by Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Hazel Scott, Phineas Newborn, Hank Crawford, Buck Clayton, Roy Haynes, Ray Bryant, James Booker, and even a vocal version by Aretha Franklin. It is still used today in many “stump the piano player” scenarios.

There are many mysterious characters in jazz and blues history whose names are remembered or recognized on the records down below the artist in parenthesis, as the composer of the song. Avery Parrish will go down in history as the composer of the classic blues piano song “After Hours.”

Avery left Hawkins in 1941 to work in California but a year later he was in a bar fight, suffered partial paralysis and his playing career was over; he was only 24. Avery Parrish, who never recorded under his own name, spent the rest of his life working day jobs and when he was 42 he died mysteriously in December,1959.

MANAUS,DOMINGO,MEIO DIA,101,5 FM, JAZZ, SYLVIA BROOKS

Desraque para leitura de Nice "N" Easy e "The More I See You".

DJANGO REINHARDT, A GUITARRA CIGANA DO JAZZ

O conceito de "Lead Guitar" (Django) e "Rhythm Guitars" (Joseph Reinhardt / Roger Chaput) nasceu no Quintette Du Hot Club De France.

CALABRIA FOTI, A RENAISSANCE WOMAN

Jazz singer Calabria Foti was born on January 23rd, in Fredonia, upstate NY, into a family of musicians, and was completely immersed in music from the very beginning.

Highly trained and gifted musicians, her parents passed on amazing intrinsic musical skills to their daughter (including an incredible memory and understanding of music after only one hearing) and their deep love for music and education.

Calabria's first instruments were jazz guitar and bass. And because of her love for classical music, she also took up the violin and became very successful, including holding positions of concertmaster and associate concertmaster in several orchestras.

By age 12, in addition to playing several instruments and seriously studying the violin, Calabria was singing and performing in nightclubs and hotels with her musician parents and their colleagues. Her parents introduced her to the music of the vocalists who would become her biggest influences: Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr, and Judy Garland.

Apparently, she learned her lessons well, as today’s music industry giants have praised Ms. Foti’s amazing vocal talent, and her unique way of making a connection with her audience.

Calabria Foti is almost a kind of musical Renaissance Woman. In addition to her talents as a performer, she is also a gifted songwriter and vocal arranger. Her passion for music education has led her to coaching and conducting vocal and string ensembles of all performance levels in both jazz and classical music. Having a natural ability for teaching and a thoroughly engaging manner, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience of both vocal and instrumental music into every educational setting.

Her CD " A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening" released in October (2007), has received rave industry reviews. The CD is a rich collection of lush ballads, edgy jazz and Broadway show tunes. Legendary singer Johnny Mathis, The King of Romance Himself, says, “One of my greatest pleasures in life is listening to a beautiful voice. This recording of Calabria Foti's voice is some of the most beautiful and artistic music I have ever heard. Her heart and mind are on display in every well-chosen song. It is a treasure . . . what a joy.”

Her other CD "When a Woman Loves a Man", is worth listening to.

J.J. JOHNSON

Jazz trombonist, composer and arranger J. J. Johnson, born James Louis Johnson, on January 22nd,1924, Indianapolis, Indiana, was also, sometimes credited as Jay Jay Johnson. He was one of the first trombonists to embrace bebop music. He has long been regarded as one of the leading trombonists of the post-swing -era, exerting a pervasive influence on other jazz musicians.
Considered by many to be the finest jazz trombonist of all time, J.J. Johnson somehow transferred the innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his more awkward instrument, playing with such speed and deceptive ease that at one time some listeners assumed he was playing valve (rather than slide) trombone! Johnson toured with the territory bands of Clarence Love and Snookum Russell during 1941-42 and then spent 1942-45 with Benny Carter's big band.
He made his recording debut with Carter (taking a solo on "Love for Sale" in 1943) and played at the first JATP concert (1944). Johnson also had led plenty of solo space during his stay with Count Basie's Orchestra (1945-46).
During 1946-50, he played with all of the top bop musicians including Charlie Parker (with whom he recorded in 1947), the Dizzy Gillespie big band, Illinois Jacquet (1947-49) and the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool Nonet. His own recordings from the era included such sidemen as Bud Powell and a young Sonny Rollins. J.J., who also recorded with the Metronome All-Stars, played with Oscar Pettiford (1951) and Miles Davis (1952) but then was outside of music, working as a blueprint inspector for two years (1952-54).
His fortunes changed when in August 1954 he formed a two -trombone quintet with Kai Winding that became known as Jay and Kai and was quite popular during its two years. After J.J. and Kai went their separate ways (they would later have a few reunions), Johnson led a quintet that often included Bobby Jaspar. He began to compose ambitious works starting with 1956's "Poem for Brass" and including "El Camino Real" and a feature for Dizzy Gillespie, "Perceptions"; his "Lament" became a standard. Johnson worked with Miles Davis, during part of 1961-62, led some small groups of his own, and by the late '60s was kept busy writing television and film scores.
J.J. Johnson was so famous in the jazz world that he kept on winning Down Beat polls in the 1970s even though he was not playing at all! However, starting with a Japanese tour in 1977, J.J. gradually returned to a busy performance schedule, leading a quintet in the 1980s that often featured Ralph Moore.

EVA TAYLOR, THE DIXIE NIGHTINGALE.

Talented entertainer, jazz and blues singer Eva Taylor, born as Irene Gibbons, on January 21st in St.Louis, Missouri, was one of the first African-American singers to be heard on radio and to record who was not a classic blues singer.

She had a very likable sound, was in-tune even if her range was small, swung well, and had an easy-to-understand voice. As with Ella Fitzgerald, a decade later, Eva Taylor always sounded happy to be singing. She started out as child actor in a traveling revue that toured the world visiting Europe, Australia and New Zealand between 1900 and 1920.

In 1920 she moved to New York City, where she became a popular singer in the night clubs of Harlem. The following year she married pianist, publisher and producer Clarence Williams. The couple collaborated on many projects, including dozens of songs, a musical revue called "Bottomland", and radio programs.

They remained married until Williams' death in 1965. In 1922 Taylor made her first record for the African-American owned Black Swan label, who billed her as "The Dixie Nightingale". She would continue to record dozens of Blues, Jazz and popular sides for Okeh and Columbia thoughout the 1920s and 1930s. She was the lead singer on several of Williams' classic Blue Five recording dates, including the famous sessions that brought Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet together in 1924 and 1925.

During the late 1920s Eva had her own radio show on NBC in New York. She retired from show business in the early 1940s, but continued to make occasional concert and night club appearances. The actor Clarence Williams III of Mod Squad fame is Eva and Clarence's grandson.

JIMMY COBB, O BATERISTA DO "KIND OF BLUE"

Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, was born in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 1929. A superb, mostly self-taught musician, Jimmy is the elder statesman of all of the incredible Miles Davis bands. Jimmy's inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963, and included the masterpiece “Kind of Blue”, the most popular jazz recording in history. He also played on “Sketches of Spain”, Someday My Prince will Come”, “Live at Carnegie Hall, “Live at the Blackhawk”, “Porgy and Bess”, and many, many other watermark Miles Davis recordings.

The Miles recordings and live performances are not the only high points of Jimmy's quiet, but truly outstanding career. Jimmy did his first recording with Earl Bostic. Known from an early age as a great accompanist, Jimmy played extensively with Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Pearl Bailey, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderly, before joining Miles in 1957. Tony Williams took over the Miles drum chair in 1963 and Jimmy left Miles to continue to work with Miles' rhythm section, Winton Kelly and Paul Chambers behind Wes Montgomery.

In addition to several Winton Kelly Trio Albums, the three did albums with Kenny Burrell, and J.J. Johnson, among others, before disbanding in the late 60's. Mr. Cobb then worked with Sarah Vaughn for 9 years. Jimmy then continued to freelance with several great groups throughout the 70's 80's and 90's including, Sonny Stitt, Nat Adderly, Ricky Ford, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, George Coleman, Fathead Newman, The Great Jazz Trio, Dave Holland and Warren Bernhardt, and many, many others worldwide. (see list on succeeding pages).

Eleana Tee produced a Television Special “So that Nobody Else Can Hear”, which aired on AandE in the early 90's featuring Jimmy playing and hangin' with Freddie Hubbard, Gregory Hines, Bill Cosby, Dave Leibman, Pee Wee Ellis, and others. Jimmy has played around the world from Newport to Monte Carlo, from LA to Japan. From New York to Brazil. He has performed for President Carter, the Shah of Iran and many other dignitaries in his storied career and is quoted extensively in “Kind of Blue”, the Documentary of those legendary recording sessions.

Currently, Jimmy is not slowing down even a little. He splits any downtime between his New York City “digs” and his home in Woodstock, NY with his two children, Jaime and Serena, and long time partner and collaborator, Eleana Tee. However, he still tours with his own band, “Cobb's Mob” and combines with many incredible artists both old and new. Jimmy has just completed a “Four Generations of Miles” album with guitarist, Mike Stern, Ron Carter (bass), and George Coleman (tenor) for Chesky records.

Jimmy released his newest and long awaited solo album, “Yesterdays”, produced by Eleana Tee for Rteesan Productions. It features Michael Brecker on tenor, Marion Meadows on soprano, Roy Hargrove, trumpet and flugelhorn, Jon Faddis, trumpet, Eric Lewis, electric piano, Peter Bernstein, guitar, Jerry Mall, percussion and John Weber on bass. This album was done in Jimmy's two adopted home towns; recorded and shot in New York, and mixed and edited in Woodstock, NY. It includes a wide variety of arrangements ranging from a unique interpretation of Jimi Hendrix “Purple Haze” to ballads “Yesterdays” and blues (All Blues, Faddis, Monk) and standards, “Without a Song” and “Love Walked Right In”. This major musical statement will include several music videos and a complete television documentary. And as usual with Jimmy Cobb, you won't believe what's up next! - - -

CONNIE HAINES, THE NIGHTINGALE FROM SAVANNAH.

Connie e Frank Sinatra (foto)

I 've Got The World on a String"

Big band vocalist Yvonne Marie Antoinette JaMais, best known as Connie Haines, "The Nightingale from Savannah", was born on January 20, 1921, in Savannah, Ga., but grew up in Florida. Her mother, who taught voice and dance, pushed her talented daughter to excel. At 4, Yvonne appeared at the Bijou Theater in Savannah in a “Saucy Baby” show. At 5, Baby Yvonne Marie won state contests in the Charleston dance in Georgia and Florida.

At 9 she won a talent contest sponsored by Uncle Ralph Feathers, who in the South ran the sort of amateur contests for which Major Bowes was famous. Before she turned 10, she parlayed that into a regular radio show on the NBC affiliate in Jacksonville, Fla., billed as Baby Yvonne Marie, the Little Princess of the Air. At 10 she appeared with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, and things accelerated even faster.

She won the actual Major Bowes contest in New York, and appeared on Fred Allen's radio show. At 16 she was auditioning for a job in the Brill Building, headquarters of Tin Pan Alley. Harry James, the orchestra leader, happened to hear her and immediately hired her. But he asked her to change her name, saying she looked like a Connie. More pointedly, he said that if she used her full name, there would be no room for him on the marquee. At first she thought he had named her Ames, not Haines, and for a few days signed autographs that way.

She was a peppy, petite, big-voiced singer with a zippy, rhythmic style who most famously teamed up with Frank Sinatra as lead vocalists with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, then went on to a prolific career of her own.

Miss Haines, made 200 recordings, including 24 records that sold more than 50,000 copies; regularly filled up prestigious nightclubs like the Latin Quarter in New York; and performed five times at the White House. Polls in music magazines in the 1940s rated her as one of the top female band singers.

While Sinatra specialized at the time in ballads and slow foxtrots, Miss Haines threw herself into rhythmic up-tempo tunes. Where did you learn to swing like that?” Dorsey asked when he first heard her at a club in New Jersey. “And when can you join my band?”

Her recordings including gospel, pop and soul, as well as big-band barnburners. The best-selling ones included “You Might Have Belonged to Another”; “Oh! Look at Me Now”; “What Is This Thing Called Love?”; and “Will You Still Be Mine?” A crowd favorite was “Snootie Little Cutie,” which often elicited ad libs from Sinatra.

She made the most of her sultry Southern accent, sometimes to Sinatra’s amusement. In her personalized rendition of “Let’s Get Away From It All,” she improvised, “We’ll spend a weekend in Dixie. I’ll get a real Southern drawl.” Sinatra piped in, “Another one?”

Miss Haines appeared on the radio with Abbott & Costello,Bing Crosby,Bob Hope and Jack Benny, among others. On television she appeared with Milton Berle,Ed Sullivan,Eddie Cantor and Perry Como. Her work on Frankie Laine’s variety show drew particular note. Her movies included her favorite, “Duchess of Idaho” (1950), with Esther Williams and Van Johnson.

After James ran into financial trouble, both singers ended up with Dorsey when he was adding a robustness and kick to his style, taking on an innovative new arranger, Sy Oliver, and six new vocalists. The others were Jo Stafford, and the three-man vocal group the Pied Pipers. Miss Haines said that Dorsey taught her phrasing, how to take one big breath and let the words flow, she told The Tampa Tribune in 1998. He told her to always think of telling a story, of “acting to music.”

At one point when she was performing with Dorsey, she remembered, Sinatra saved her life. She was about to go on stage in Madison Square Garden when a smoker in a balcony tossed a match and set her ruffled tulle dress on fire. Sinatra threw his coat over her and fell on her, smothering the flames, she said.

Miss Haines’s marriage to Robert DeHaven, a World War II fighter ace, ended in divorce. She is survived by her son, Robert DeHaven Jr. of San Francisco.

Two weeks after her funeral services were held, Miss Haines’s voice — still strong and swinging — could be heard on her answering machine. “I’ve got the world on a string,” she sang.

Ms. Haines died at the age of 87, in Clearwater Beach, Fla on September, 2008.

RAY ANTHONY, BIG BAND IS HIS BUSINESS.

Legendary bandleader Ray Anthony, was born on January 20th,1922 in Cleveland ,Ohio and began his musical career at age five, playing in his family's group, the Antonini Family Orchestra. During his highschool years he wiorked with local bands and later made his professional debut with Al Donahue in 1940.

After only a short time with Donahue, Anthony was hired by Glenn Miller but left after six months, unable to get along with the famous orchestra leader. He then played briefly with Jimmy Dorsey before forming his own group, which featured unique instrumentation -- one trumpet, one French horn, five saxes, and three rhythm.

In 1942 he entering the Navy, where he led a service group in the Pacific. Upon being discharged in 1946 he formed a new orchestra, signing with Capitol Records. When Ralph Flanagan began the parade of Glenn Miller imitation bands Anthony fell in line and, like other imitators, made good money. During the 1950s he had a string of hits, including “Peter Gunn,” “The Bunny Hop,” “Harbor Lights,” and a jazzed-up version of the Dragnet theme song. He also appeared in several movies during that decade, such as This Could Be the Night and the Fred Astaire vehicle Daddy Long Legs.

Ray Anthony’s Harry James style trumpet and arrangements were mainly aimed at a more commercial oriented crowd rather than jazz fans. However a few of his late 50’s releases show the swinging side of Ray Anthony. Several noted here contain recordings far removed from his usual commercial fare.

One of his biggest “hits” was the theme to “Dragnet” which he recorded in 1953. Although much of Anthony’s output is considered commercial (or as Down Beat magazine in the 40’s would have called it “corn”) he has cut several records that swing heartily. These recordings sound so dissimilar from his usual output it is hard to believe it could be the same musician.

Two releases in particular stand out; the first a great LP from the 1950’s called “Anthony Plays Allen.” This finds Anthony’s trumpet flanked by the likes of Conte Candoli, Plas Johnson, Conrad Gozzo, Skeets Herfurt, and Alvin Stoller among others. To a lesser degree but still enjoyable is the release “Swings The Thing.” Fortunately both at this writing are available on a single CD. A great side from his early Capitol days is “Skycoach” recorded in 1950. This recording flows smoothly and features both Mel Lewis and Ray Brown, two jazz heavyweights.

His biggest hit came in 1954, when, after bugging Jack Webb for months to get him to release the recording rights, he recorded a cover of the theme to Webb's cop show, Dragnet. He also earned a Top 10 hit with a dance tune that sparked a craze even shorter-lived than the Macarena: The Bunny Hop. Anthony's rockin' cover of “Peter Gunn” was the probably the best-selling single recording of that tune.

Anthony eventually broke up his big band and settled down to work in Vegas and elsewhere with smaller combos. He continues to run his own label, Aerospace, which reissues his recordings as well as those of Glenn Miller and Billy May.

During the 1980s Anthony began touring with a big band again. He also formed Big Bands 80s, an organization dedicated to providing big band music to schools, radio stations and other venues.

Ray Anthony remains, to this day, dedicated to his calling and has been one of Big Band music's most dedicated ambassadors. For sixty years he has helped keep alive the sounds of America's golden age of jazz and pop music.

CYRUS CHESTNUT

American jazz pianist, songwriter and producer Cyrus Chestnut, was born on January 17, 1963 in Baltimore, Maryland., son of McDonald ( a ritires post office employee and church organist) and Flossie ( a city social services worker and church choir director). In 2006, Josh Tyrangiel, music critic for Time Magazine, wrote: "What makes Chestnut the best jazz pianist of his generation is a willingness to abandon notes and play space."

Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche, though his gospel sound is apparent on a number of his recordings.

Chestnut started his musical career at the age of six, playing piano at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in hometown. By age nine, he was studying classical music at Peabody Institute. In 1985, Chestnut earned a degree in jazz composition and arranging from Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, Chestnut was awarded the Eubie Blake Fellowship (1982), the Quincy Jones Scholarship (1983), and the Oscar Peterson Scholarship (1984).

Chestnut toured as pianist for Jon Hendricks, 1986-88; Terrence Blanchard, 1988-90; Donald Harrison, 1988-90; Wynton Marsalis, 1991; and the Betty Carter Trio, 1991-93. His association with Carter, which began in '91, significantly affected his outlook and approach to music, confirming his already iconoclastic instincts. Carter advised him to "take chances" and "play things I've never heard," Chestnut says.

In 1993, at the age of 30, Chestnut signed with Atlantic Records, releasing the critically-acclaimed Revelation (1993), followed by The Dark Before The Dawn (1994) (the album debuted in the sixth spot on the Billboard Jazz Charts), Earth Stories (1995) and then Cyrus Chestnut (1998).

Chestnut has also performed and/or recorded with, Freddy Cole,Bette Midler,Jon Hendricks,Freddie Hubbard,Jimmy Scott,Chick Corea,Isaac Hayes,Kevin Mahogany, Dizzy Gillespie, and opera diva Kathleen Battle, most notably on the Sony Classical recording "So Many Stars". Their shared church roots resulted in such a positive chemistry between Battle and Chestnut that he then joined the star soprano on a Fall 1996 U.S. Tour.

Later that same year came Blessed Quietness: A Collection of Hymns, Spirituals and Carols (1996), a reverently assembled album of traditional numbers deeply instilled with the gospel and blues Chestnut grew up listening to. In addition to appearing on the soundtrack to director Robert Altman's 1996 feature film "Kansas City", Cyrus also made his big screen debut portraying a Count Basie-inspired pianist.

In 2006, Chestnut released his first album Genuine Chestnut on TelArc Records. On it he is accompanied by his regular trio which includes Michael Hawkins, bass and Neal Smith, drums.

Additional artists on board for this session include Russell Malone, guitar and Steven Koon, percussion. Includes satisfying jazz interpretations of some well known pop numbers of the past half century, including “If,” the early ‘70s soft-rock ballad by Bread.. “This song has been with me ever since the sixth grade,” Chestnut recalls. “I had to play it for my English teacher’s wedding. I’ve played it in many and various contexts. I actually played it in a Top 40 band when I was just out of school. A lot of time has passed, but then recently I just started thinking about it again.” Best of all, he plays gospel tunes with a heartfelt fervor that never descends into sentimentality.

Chestnut's own "Mason Dixon Line" is one of the album's high points, a joyful bebop number that makes you hope he'll someday do a whole album of Bud Powell compositions. The album's relentless, midtempo pleasantness makes it easy to stop paying attention by about halfway through, but every time you catch yourself drifting and start listening closely again, you'll notice something else wonderful.
