DAVID MURRAY

Tenor saxophonist and sometimes bass clarinetist David Murray, was born on February 19, 1955, in Oakland, California. Murray plays mainly tenor saxophone and sometimes bass clarinet. He has recorded prolifically for many record labels since the mid-1970s.

Murray was initially influenced by free jazz musicians such as Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp. He gradually evolved a more diverse style in his playing and compositions. Murray set himself apart from most tenor players of his generation by not taking John Coltrane as his model, choosing instead to incorporate elements of mainstream players Coleman Hawkins,Ben Webster and Paul Gonsalves into his mature style. Despite this, he recorded a tribute to Coltrane, Octet Plays Trane, in 1999. His 1996 tribute to the Gratefuldead,Dark Star, was also critically well received.

Murray was a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet with Oliver Lake,JUlius Hempfill and Hamiet Bluiett. He has recorded or performed with musicians such as Henry Threadmill,James Blodd Ulmer,Olu Dara,Tani Tabbal,Nutch Morris,McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jnes and Steve McCall. David Murray's use of the circular breathing technique has enabled him to play astonishingly long phrases.

.

Faixas: A Lot to Remember; Peculiar Universe; I Forgot To Have Children; Old at 18/Dog Bowl; Perugia; Things I Learned in High School; Two Desperate Women in Their Late 30s; The Girl With the Lazy Eye; How Did We End Up Here?; Scrabble; I Always Had a Thing For You.

Músicos: Russell Ferrante: piano; Shelly Berg, piano ; Dick Hyman: piano ; Michael Valerio: baixo; Grant Geissman: guitarra; Eddie Arkin: guitarra ritmo ; Bela Fleck: banjo ; Michael Shapiro: bateria/ percussão; Gregg Field: bateria; Tony Morales: percussão adicional; Warren Luening: trompete; Bob Leatherbarrow: vibrafone.

DEWEY ERNEY, JAZZ VOCALIST AND INTERPRETER OF THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

Jazz vocalist and interpreter of the Great American Songbook Dewey Erney, was born on February 19, 1937. Erney has often been compared Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra, but his voice is actually most similar to that of the late Mel Tormé.

Jazz writers, reviewers, and other musicians have given warm--even rave--reviews concerning Dewey Erney's personal appearances and recordings. It is significant that Dewey has never received a negative review. This is not to say that he isn't appreciated by the general audiences as well. He has that rare gift of being able to entertain and "move" his audiences while being appreciated by the top-flight musicians he consistently works with. The remarks most often heard deal with the musicianship and sincerity of the performance. It is obvious to everyone just how much Dewey Erney loves the music he is performing.
Dewey's vinyl recordings "A Beautiful Friendship" and "The Second Set," with the brilliant guitarist Ron Escheté and his trio, received terrific acclaim and air play (4 Stars by Leonard Feather of the LA Times). His five compact discs "Standards of Excellence", volumes I thru 5 are receiving kudos for the sheer musicality and honesty displayed. Dewey has all the necessary elements that make a great singer: an excellent voice, phrasing and sense of timing, proper use of dynamics, clear diction, honest heartfelt emotion, musical integrity, and great taste in the material he selects.
He truly loves the music he sings and he persuades you to love it too. The music is an extension of him as a person. Dewey probably has a larger repertoire than any other singer on the planet. He knows well over 1,000 songs by memory and can interpret them in his own distinctive way.
Through the years, Dewey has performed at the most prestigious club and concert venues in the Southern California area--jazz clubs such as Alfonse's in Toluca Lake, Steamer's in Fullerton, Kikuya in Huntington Beach, The Jazz Bakery in Culver City, Ca Del Solé in North Hollywood concert settings: guest vocalist with the Riverside Symphony Orchestra, 8 summers as the vocalist with the Long Beach Municipal Band, performances at the Carpenter's Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, and the list goes on. Dewey has also appeared in many jazz festivals, including the Manassas Jazz Festival in Manassas, Virginia, and the Hyatt Newporter's Jazz Festival in Newport Beach, CA.
Here are some of the musicians that Dewey has performed with over the years: Ron Escheté, Tom Ranior, Gene Harris, Abe and Sam Most, Jake Hanna, Jeff Hamilton, Joe La Barbara, Luther Hughes, Jack Prather, Daniel and Benjamin May, David Derge, Tom Kubis, Alan Broadbent, Dan St. Marseille, Denny Dennis, Andy Simpkins, Dave Mackay, Brian O'Rourke, Doug MacDonald, Paul Kreibich, Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Bill Berry, Chuck Bergborer, Tom Warrington, Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Marty Harris, Gerry Schroeder, Ross Tompkins, Jack Sheldon and Lou Levy to name a few.
Dewey's Compact Discs "Dearly Beloved," "You and The Night and The Music", "Time Was", "You'd Be So Nice To Come To", and "Shades of Love" are being played on radio stations all over the country and sales are consistently on the up-swing.
There is probably one quote that describes Dewey's musical life best -- "If you love the melody, if you love the lyric, you'll love Dewey Erney."

RANDY CRAWFORD

Jazz and R&B singer Veronica Crawford, best known as Randy Crawford, was born on February 18, 1952, in Macon, Georgia. She has proved more successful in Europe than her homeland, where she has only cracked the Bilboard Hot 100 once with the song " Street Life".

Crawford first performed at club gigs from Cincinnati to Saint-Tropez, but made her name in mid 1970s in New York, where she sang with jazzmen George Benson and Cannonball Adderly. Adderley invited her to sing on his album " Big Man" (1975). Crawford recorded "Don't Get Caught in Love's Triangle," produced by Johnny Bristol, during her short stint on the Fantasy Label.

She led R&B veterans The Crusaders on the transatlantic hit "Street Life" (1979). This song stayed atop the U.S jazz chart for twenty weeks and has since become both a rare groove and disco classic. It was featured in the soundtrack for the film, Sharky's Machine and appeared in commercials in the early 2000s. She moved to Warner Bros. and after "Street Life," recorded and toured Europe with the Crusaders. Crawford was named the 'Most Outstanding Performer' at the 1980 Tokyo Music Festival.

Her follow up solo efforts included "One Day I'll Fly Away" (1980); "You Might Need Somebody" (1981); and "Rainy Night in Georgia" (1981); which all became soul standards. The album, "Secret Combination" (1981) stayed on the UK Albums Chart for sixty weeks, after which her profile dipped, despite a return to the UK Top Ten with "Almaz" in 1986. She remained with Warner Bros. through to the early 1990s, but was unable to score either a big R&B hit or major crossover success, despite having one of the most readily identifiable voices and distinctive approaches of any contemporary female vocalist.

CD "Naked And True" (1995) brought Crawford back to her roots: it included George Benson's "Give Me the Night", and confirmed her soul heritage by featuring Funkalelicists Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and the Fred Wesley Horns. She enjoyed her highest profile of the decade when rising starlet, Shola Ama, had a worldwide hit with her 1997 cover of "You Might Need Somebody".

Crawford recorded a live session with Joe Sample on 24 July 2007 at Abbey Road Studios for Live from Abbey Road. The episode she shared with David Gilmour and Amos Lee was screened on the Sundance Channel in the U.S. and Channel 4 in the UK.

She has sung with Bootsy Collins,Johnny Bristol, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, Rick Springfield and Joe Sample, amongst others.

LOU ANN BARTON, THE QUEEN OF TEXAS BLUES

Roadhouse blues singer Lou Ann Barton, was born on February 17, 1954, in Fort Worth,Texas.Lou Ann's fans are just happy to get something new from the seldom recorded Barton. She's seldom on the stage either, and knowledgeable blues fans are always seeking information about where to see her or where to get her music (nobody knows...). Her frustrating elusiveness is a problem for the true blues fan.
Lou Ann Barton is one of the finest purveyors of raw, unadulterated roadhouse blues that you'll ever hear. She's a veteran of thousands of dance hall and club shows all over Texas.

Considered her finest album, "Old Enough", was first released in 1981. "Old Enough" was reissued on compact disc in 1992 on the Antone's label.

In the early 1970s, she based out in Austin and became a member of the Triple Threat Revue, with W.C. Clark and Stevie Ray Vaughan. She was a founding member of Vaughan's band Double Trouble, and did a stint with the jump blues band Roomful of Blues. During that time, in 1975, she joined up with W.C. Clark to form his W. C. Clark Blues Revue.

Her release the 1989 album "Read My Lips" for the Austin-based Antone's Records, a triumphant return to her blues roots that featured inspired versions of songs made famous by Slim Harpo,Hank Ballard and Wanda Jackson, among others. Barton later collaborated with singers Marcia Ball and Angela Strehli on the release "Dreams Come True" (1990).

In 1990 Barton made an appearance on Austin City Limits with the W. C. Clark Blues Revue.

The show was taped in celebration of Clark's 50th birthday. Other artists included Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughn, and Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

A PLACE TO BE, PRIMEIRO CD SOLO DE HIROMI

Faixas : 1. BQE 5:56 ; 2. Choux a la creme 5:29; 3. Sicilian Blue 8:26; 4. Bern Baby Bern 2:56; 5. Somewhere 5:38; 6. Capecod Chips 5:41; 7. Islands Azores 4:29;
8. Pachelbel's Canon 5:22; 9. Viva! Vegas: Show City, Show Girl 3:56 ; 10. Viva! Vegas: Daytime in Las Vegas 4:30; 11. Viva! Vegas: The Gambler 5:37; 12. Place To Be 6:39

HAROLD ARLEN, THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC

Nos anos 40 em parceria com Johnny Mercer escreveu "Blues in the Night","That Old Black Magic", "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive, "Any Place I Hang my Hat is Home" e "One More for my Baby (One More for the Road). Com “Over the Rainbow”, ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Canção (original) em 1939, no filme The Wizard of Oz.

Harold Arlen, faleceu em abril de 1986.

Harold canta e toca "The Man That Got Away"

Pianist and composer Hyman Arluck, aka, Harold Arlen, was born on February 15,1905 in Buffalo, New York, the child of a Jewish cantor. His twin brother died the next day. He learned the piano as a youth and formed a band as a young man. He achieved some local success as a pianist and singer and moved to New York City where he landed a job as accompanist in vaudeville.

At this point, he changed his name to Harold Arlen. Between 1926 and about 1934, Arlen appeared occasionally as a band vocalist on records by The Buffalodians, Red Nichols, Joe Venuti, Leo Reisman and Eddie Duchin, usually singing his own compositions.

In 1929, Arlen composed his first well-known song: "Get Happy" (with lyrics by Ted Koehler). Throughout the early and mid-1930s, Arlen and Koehler wrote shows for the Cotton Club, a popular Harlem night club, as well as for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films. Arlen and Koehler's partnership resulted in a number of hit songs, including the familiar standards "Let's Fall in Love" and "Stormy Weather." Arlen continued to perform as a pianist and vocalist with some success, most notably on records with Leo Resiman's society dance orchestra.

Arlen's compositions have always been popular with jazz musicians because of his facility at incorporating a blues feeling into the idiom of the conventional American popular song.
In the mid-1930s, Arlen married, and spent increasing time in California, writing for movie musicals.

It was at this time that he began working with lyricist E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, the team was hired by Metro-Goldwyn Mayer to compose songs for The Wizard of Oz. The most famous of these is the song "Over the Rainbow" for which they won the Academy AWward for Best Music, Original Song" They also wrote "Down with Love", a song later featured in the 2003 movie Down with Love.

Arlen was a longtime friend and former roommate of actor Ray Bolger who would star in The Wizard of Oz, the film for which "Over the Rainbow" was written.
In the 1940s, he teamed up with lyricist Johnny Mercer, and continued to write hit songs like "Blues in the Night", "That Old Black Magic," "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive," "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home" and "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" .

Arlen composed two defining tunes which bookend Judy Carland's musical persona: as a yearning, innocent girl in "Over the Rainbow" and a world-weary, "chic chanteuse" with "The Man that Got Away".

Harold Arlen passed away on April, 1986.

DENA DeROSE

Jazz pianist, singer and educator Dena DeRose, was born on February 15, 1966, in Binghamton, New York, to a construction worker and a former professional ice skater with the Ice Capades. She began playing the piano at age three and soon became a fan of jazz. As a child she also played organ and percussion and played piano in school bands. Although she began her career just as a pianist, medical problems with her hand forced her to become a vocalist as well.

When she was a teenager, she used to drive to New York City to see jazz musicians like Hank Jones and Mulgrew Miller. After high scool, DeRose was offered a scholarship to Concordia College but chose to attend Binghamton University instead.

Dena has brought that vitality and innovation to performances alongside the likes of Ray Brown, Clark Terry, Marian McPartland, Benny Golson, Rufus Reid, Slide Hampton and many, many others, and numerous jazz festivals worldwide have had Dena on their roster, including Monterey, San Francisco and Litchfield in the U.S., the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Israel and the Ancona Festival in Italy.

As a recording artist, Dena has 5 CDs to her credit, all of which have received superior accolades. Cadence Magazine gave her both their Album of the Year and Best Vocal Jazz Album awards for “Another World” and “I Can See Clearly Now”. Christopher Louden of Jazz Times says that the MaxJazz label “… takes another big leap forward” with the release of her latest,” A Walk in the Park”. It also received three Grammy considerations.

Astoundingly, Dena has also found time to hone her skills as a jazz educator, and is on the faculty at some prestigious education venues, including the New School and Purchase College in New York, The Hartt School of Music in Connecticut and the Groningen Conservatory of Music in The Netherlands. She frequently teaches at clinics and workshops, such as the Dave Brubeck Institute, the NJPAC Jazz for Teen Program, the Stanford Jazz Workshop and several summer jazz camps. She has served as a judge at both the Thelonious Monk Competition and the NJ Star Ledger Scholarship Awards.

JACOB DO BANDOLIM

ROB McCONNELL

Canadian jazz valve trombonist, composer, arranger, music educator and recording artist Robert Murray Gordon (Rob) McConnell, was born on February 14, 1935, in London, Ontario. Rob took up the valve trombone in high school, and began his performing career in the early 1950s, performing and studying with Don Thompson, Bobby Gimby, and later, with fellow Canadian Maynard Ferguson. In 1968 he formed "The Boss Brass", a big band that would become his primary performing and recording unit through the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1988, McConnell took a teaching position at the Dick Grove School of Music in California, but gave up his position and returned to Canada a year later. In 1997, McConnell was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and in 1998 was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Since that time he has remained active, touring internationally both as a performer and educator, running clinics around the world and performing as both a leader and a guest artist. The newly formed Rob McConnell tentet has been quite successful, producing three major records, The Rob McConnell Tentet (2000), Thank You, Ted (2002), and Music of the Twenties (2003).

McConnell assembled the original Boss Brass from Toronto studio musicians. The instrumentation of the band was originally 16 pieces, consisting of trumpets, trombones, french horns, and a rhythm section, but no saxophones. McConnell introduced a saxophne section in 1970, and expanded the trumpet section to include a fifth trumpet in 1976, bringing the total to 22 members.

Over the years, Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass became one of Canada's most popular jazz ensembles, performing live and recording for Concord Jazz and a variety of other labels. Mel Thormé has said, of his first recording session with the Boss Brass in 1987, "Making this record was one of the two or three greatest musical experiences in my long and checkered career."

MANAUS,DOMINGO,MEIO DIA,101,5, JAZZ & BLUES, HENRI SALVADOR, B.B. KING

(A banda "All That Jazz" no palco)

A participação de Lisa Ekdahl em "All I Really Want is Love" eleva a qualidade da audição.

"Teach me Tonight", "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" e "Girl from Ipanema", esta última lida em jazz pela primira vez, se destacam.
